Credential Revocation
When an organisation revokes a credential they previously issued to you, your wallet detects the change automatically. This page explains what revocation means, what you will see in your wallet, and what to do next.
What does "revoked" mean?
Revocation means the organisation that issued your credential has declared it no longer valid. This does not mean your identity is invalid — only that this specific credential is.
Common reasons an organisation might revoke a credential:
- You left an employer (employee or access credentials are revoked on offboarding)
- A document was cancelled — for example, a lost or stolen passport
- The credential was issued in error
- A time-limited access grant has ended
- A course completion was reversed after an academic integrity review
How does your wallet find out?
Every issued credential contains a link to the issuer's revocation status list — a public file that the issuer updates when they revoke credentials. Your wallet checks this list when you try to use the credential.
You do not need to do anything for this to happen. The wallet handles it automatically.
What you will see
When your wallet detects that a credential has been revoked:
- The credential in your Profile tab shows a red "Revoked" badge.
- The credential will not be offered when you sign in to an app.
- If you had no other credential for that claim, your wallet will fall back to a lower trust level (for example, self-attested information, if available).
You are not locked out of your wallet. The revocation only affects the specific credential that was revoked.
What to do if a credential is revoked unexpectedly
If you see a "Revoked" badge and were not expecting it:
- Contact the organisation that issued the credential — use the contact details on their website or in the email they sent you when they issued the credential.
- Ask them to confirm whether the revocation was intentional.
- If it was a mistake, ask them to issue a new credential.
mwen.io cannot reinstate revoked credentials. Only the issuing organisation can issue a new one.
Can you dispute a revocation?
mwen.io does not have a dispute process — the relationship is between you and the issuing organisation. If you believe a credential was revoked in error, contact the issuer directly.
